Be The First One on Your Block....
WHAT IS A “HOUSE CONCERT”?
House concerts are becoming more and more popular, and for good reason. Music loving adults are tired of braving the bars; loud patrons, competing with louder crowds watching sports on tv screens, poor service, below average food and drink, and no guarantee of a good seat, all for the sake of seeing their favorite artist.
The good news is, anyone (and I mean anyone) can host a house concert. You don’t have to have a big living room, or a brand new deck. You don’t have to own a piano, or have lots of friends with similar musical tastes as you. All you have to do is invite your favorite artists to come and perform, and provide them with a quiet, listening room for them to perform in. A concert is generally an hour (or longer, if you request). But remember, it’s a venue for listening and it is a concert, so you want to book it for the amount of time you feel your guests will want to listen and enjoy.
A HOUSE CONCERT CAN BE FOR ANY OCCASION...
HAVE A CONCERT TO CELEBRATE BIRTHDAYS, ANNIVERSARIES, GRADUATIONS, FAMILY REUNIONS, HOLIDAYS and any reason you can think of to have live music performed just for you at your home. A house concert can be for just two people who are celebrating an anniversary, an intimate dinner party, or it can be for 40 of your closest friends. The sky’s the limit! The important thing is that having music at your home when you are hosting people, creates indelible, beautiful memories, both of the music and of the people who were there.
WHERE DO I START?
You’ve already begun. You’ve gone to the artist’s website to see if they perform house concerts. Boneyard the Trio is a fabulous instrumental trio that features Carole on guitar, legendary drummer Dom Moio on drums and hand percussion, and Los Angeles icon Todd Johnson on bass. This flexible, entertaining trio can play as quietly as is necessary for a very intimate space, or groove louder for larger spaces. BONEYARD is a fun, unique trio that will be sure to please. For a BONEYARD setlist click at the bottom of the page. Carole Pellatt performs house concerts as an artist on solo acoustic guitar, both playing instrumentals and singing familiar pop and rock songs. She can lead a group of friends through some of their favorite songs, for hosts who want to include their guests in the concert. For more info on Carole’s songlist as a solo artist Click at the bottom of the page.
Any of the bands on Carole’s website listed on the “My Projects” page are available to perform for a house concert, so be sure to check out all the groups you can host.
HOW TO NEGOTIATE
You would be surprised at how inexpensive a house concert can be for you. In fact, some house concerts actually make some money for the host. Once you’ve decided that you want to host a concert at your home, you will contact Michael at reelcoolimage@cox.net Then, you make an offer to have Carole Pellatt or the trio BONEYARD perform at your home. Now, consider this: It’s perfectly appropriate to charge your guests a fee. This is a “house concert” you are hosting. You can decide how many people to invite, and how much to charge for admission to the concert. Offer food, and charge more, offer an array of beverages and treats, and charge more. It’s not uncommon for those who host to have been able to put on a great house concert, and walk away with a little extra money that they’ve made. Even consider offering gift cards, gas cards, or frequent flyer miles as a tip at the end of the night, although, a tip is not expected. And you don’t have to be “local”. Carole Pellatt will travel anywhere in North America and beyond to perform concerts. However, it is expected that as part of your concert budget, you will cover travel expenses.
WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A “HOUSE CONCERT” AND BACKGROUND MUSIC?
If you are looking for background music, while your guests mingle and chat, then house concerts are not for you and simply let Michael at reelcoolimage@cox.net know that you want background music for your event. He will quote you a price accordingly. And you will be providing a rich, beautiful, musical background for your special occasion that will be sure to warm your guests’ hearts.
SET UP YOUR HOME FOR A HOUSE CONCERT
Make no mistake: As a host, this is your show. It’s up to you to set the tone of the concert. But if you are looking to expose great artists to other music fans in your home, then set up the room as a listening space. A simple chair with no arms or a stool in the corner of the room or in front of a fireplace is a great “stage” for the performance. Arranging chairs to face this stage is a great way to subtly tell your guests that they were invited to hear music. Don’t worry if you don’t have chairs for everyone. Many people will prefer to stand back and enjoy the music. Merely lining up a few chairs in a semi-circle will give the room a listening environment. Your house has now become a venue for a very special event.
